Somatic therapy is a form of body-oriented counselling which is based on an exploration of the body as lived and experienced…the embodied being that we are.

Its primary focus is on increasing awareness of our relationship to our body and to the various relationships between facets of ourselves such as body parts, regions, sensations, thoughts, feelings and everyday habits.

An important guiding idea behind this work is that what goes on in the mind reflects what goes on in the body. This unity that we are I call the ‘bodymind’.

Somatic therapy trusts that human beings have a self-regulating, self-correcting and self-improving mechanism. This mechanism I call ‘body-wisdom’. This inherent wisdom is cultivated with increased somatic awareness.

Cultivating our somatic awareness involves increasing mindfulness of our various senses, feelings, breath, our movements and postural habits. Various exercises, forms of bodywork and verbal interventions are part of this process.

Somatic Therapy utilizes a variety of eclectic and integrative approaches including verbal dialogue, bio-energetic grounding exercises, breathwork, image-work, training in Chi Kung vitality exercises, mindfulness/relaxation practices and nourishing touch.

This work is client driven, in that we follow the guiding wisdom directing the client’s process, and progresses slowly and gently.

At its heart Somatic Therapy involves the creation of a trusting and safe therapeutic relationship.

It is encouraged that this work is seen to involve a series of weekly sessions.

I am a qualified counsellor, bodyworker and have two years training in Somatic Psychotherapy. This work catalyzes all these interests.

I have particular affinity to the Focusing method of Eugene Gendlin. Several articles on this method can be found here.

Somatic Therapy sessions are $70 an hour.
